The hypocrisy of GoFundMe is backfiring.
The fundraising company decided to seize the funds to the Canadian freedom truckers, essentially stealing $9,000,000 from them.
According to a statement from GoFundMe, this comes after being in contact with authorities. We already know that politicians in Canada have called for GoFundMe to seize the funds from the truckers, and it now appears that they obeyed.
What made things even more crazy is that they were at first not going to refund the donated money back to the donors. If people didn’t manually request a refund, GoFundMe would seize their money and give it to a ”credible” charity instead, which probably would have meant the money would go to some far-left organization.
This is very dubious behavior indeed and caused United States attorney generals to call for investigations.
After hours of public pressure, GoFundMe did reverse course and announced they would be refunding everyone automatically instead.
Now here comes the interesting part to the story that might have gone unnoticed.
GoFundMe says that a reason they seized the money is because they claim, without evidence, that the freedom protest has become an ”occupation”.
A few years ago in the USA there was a group of far-left Antifa extremists who took over several blocks in the city of Seattle. They called it the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), or Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) and was a lawless area taken over and ruled anarchist extremists.
Things got so bad that there were several shootings and people were murdered. This was a literal occupied area where law enforcement had been chased out by violent far-left extremists.
What did GoFundMe do about this? They were not only hosting a fundraiser for people within CHAZ / CHOP, they even posted in support of them AFTER people had been murdered there.
This was a literal occupied area in Seattle that saw actual violence and GoFundMe did not take down fundraising that was happening there.
Unlike the far-left occupation in CHAZ/CHOP, the truckers freedom protesters have been entirely peaceful. People have been praying and singing together, celebrating, setting up soup kitchens and giving food to the homeless and even having bouncy castles for the kids.
So when hundreds of truckers in Canada are protesting for freedom and want to be able to continue to work for a living, GoFundMe seized millions of dollars from them, seemingly at the request of Canadian authorities.
What is the reason for GoFundMe supporting the violent occupation in CHAZ/CHOP, but banning the fundraising for the peaceful Canadian truckers protest?
This move by GoFundMe is now backfiring, as another free speech alternative called GiveSendGo has set up a new fundraising for the Canadian freedom truckers.
Despite dealing with unprecedented amounts of traffic to their servers, causing their website to be very slow, GiveSendGo has already raised over $1,000,000 to the truckers in less than one day since GoFundMe shut down the campaign.
It is clear that people are not happy with how GoFundMe has behaved.
We are living in interesting times when this can even happen. People are out here protesting against tyranny and they get their donations seized by a private company. This sets a dangerous precedent. There is no other way to describe this move other than tyrannical.
Despite all that has happened, the truckers are still protesting for freedom with thousands in the city of Ottowa today.
