The truth about digital ID
In Scandinavia it is already here. Welcome to the Big Brother society.
The year is 2023 and you live in Norway. You are logging in to the government health website to check your covid status and to get the QR code for the covid passport. As you login, you need to verify your identity by using your digital ID.
You simply open the app on your phone and scan your face. The facial recognition technology recognizes your face and you are now logged in with your digital ID and able to see your covid passport.
Does this scenario sound like something out of a science fiction book about some dystopian future? Well, you would be wrong, as this could very well be something that takes place in Norway next year.
You see, Norway recently announced that they are getting a new digital ID system where people can use biometrics to verify their identity online. And this government health website? That already exists.
On this website you can change your personal doctor, you can see your vaccination history and also see your covid status. They even have a place for your covid QR code to be used for travel within Europe. If you are vaccinated, recovered or recently tested, you get a green light and if you want to travel to say Germany, you show them the QR code. The code is actually supposed to work in all of the EU.
Digital ID is nothing new. We have had it in Scandinavia for many years now, and it is more or less mandatory if you want to live modern life. It is required for online banking, buying stuff with your card online and many more things. The police can even send you digital speeding tickets where you use your digital ID when paying!
And the state even knows your phone number as it is registered on your digital ID as I will talk about in more detail further down in this article.
I happen to live in Norway, so I can tell you in detail how this system works here. Let’s take a closer look at how this digital ID actually works…
