I'm in Canada. Back in the 1990s our government tried to ban Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. There was a pushback. But processed Kraft cheese was fine.

Exactly!
I ONLY use parmigianno Reggiano in my cooking.
Do the math (I did): authentic Reggiano is D.O.P., and cheaper to purchase in Canada than in Italy. (True story.)
The CRAP Kraft et al ("no name") peddle is a "manufactured product", found in the dry goods aisle, not a wholesome food which must be refrigerated.

What about grana padano? Tastes almost the same and cheaper.
Just not aged as long, not as sharp, but sure, just as good!
